The Simon Gidman designed Golf Course - a challenging Par 72, 6633 yards - is a perfect example of effective course planning that balances the natural contours of 205 acres of delightful Wiltshire countryside with features to excite and test players of all skills and ambitions.
The following independent article represents an objective view of Wrag Barn:
Wrag Barn GC is only 17 years old, but has matured well in that time to develop into a splendid test of golf from start to finish. The opening tee shot tempts the brave (or foolhardy?) to drive over trees for a shorter second shot on the right hand dogleg than the more conservative will have. Woe betide those who don't get it just right though. The final tee shot should be simple enough for a relatively short par 4. The combination of a pond, an internal out of bounds and a huge fairway bunker has caused many a decent card to be ruined at the final hurdle though.
In between, the course uses the gently rolling countryside well, with holes set in every direction. Greens are generally pretty well protected against the wayward shot, but are large enough to be inviting when standing over the approach shot. They certainly hold a well struck ball and are very true. Most have subtle rather than obvious borrows, with the notable exception of the stroke index 1 eighth. As you walk down the fourth it's worth noting the pin position on the eighth to help hit the right level when you play it. The fifth is the course's signature hole. Most of its 172 yards must be carried over a large pond which wraps around the front half of the green. Legend has it that 3000 balls were collected from the pond when it was first drained to be enlarged. The extensive tree planting in its early years is now paying dividends. Wrag Barn is no longer a course where a hapless hacker can spray the ball around without fear of being severely penalised.
